Die Ukraine erwägt eine Abkehr vom US-Dollar und eine engere Anbindung ihrer Währung an den Euro, erklärte Nationalbankspräsident Andrij Pyschnyj gegenüber Reuters. Grund dafür sei die Fragmentierung des Welthandels und die wachsenden Beziehungen zu Europa.

Die Europäische Kommission will die Zusammenarbeit mit den Vereinigten Staaten im Bereich der Künstlichen Intelligenz deutlich ausbauen. Ziel ist es, Spannungen zu entschärfen und einen drohenden Handelskonflikt mit dem wichtigsten Handelspartner abzuwenden.

Die USA verstärken ihre Geheimdienstaktivitäten in Grönland, um die Unabhängigkeitsbewegung der Insel zu überwachen, berichtete das Wall Street Journal. Zudem sollen Personen identifiziert werden, die den USA gegenüber wohlwollend eingestellt sind.

Unter dem Vorwand wissenschaftlicher Forschung soll Finnland im vergangenen Jahr kommerziellen Fischern erlaubt haben, Lachse in der Ostsee zu fangen. Jetzt wird das Land von der Europäischen Kommission dafür zur Rechenschaft gezogen.

Die geopolitische und strategische Bedeutung der Türkei kann demokratische Rückschritte nicht ausgleichen und die EU-Beitrittskriterien sind nicht verhandelbar, so das EP.

On 12 May 2025, the AFET and BUDG Committees will hold a second Dialogue on the Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans. The Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans is a new financial instrument aimed at supporting the socio-economic convergence between the six Western Balkan countries and the EU on their path to accession. It consists of €4 billion in highly preferential loans and budgetary guarantees, as well as €2 billion in grants.
In October last year, the Commission adopted an Implementing Decision approving the reform agendas of the Western Balkan countries, which make EU support conditional on the prior fulfilment of reforms. In March, the Commission started disbursing the pre-financing under the Facility to the Western Balkan countries. Members will have the opportunity to discuss with Commissioner Marta Kos the state of play of the implementation of the Facility, in particular the reforms foreseen in the reform agendas, the challenges as well as the payments made. The dialogue on the Reform and Growth Facility shall take place twice a year. A first dialogue meeting took place in September last year, following the entry into force of the Regulation.

Members will have the possibility to discuss with a panel of three distinguished experts on transatlantic relations about the current state of relations and prospects for future developments.
The public hearing will feed into the preparation of the AFET own-initiative report on EU-US political relations by AFET Standing Rapporteur on the United States, Michal Szczerba.
