Debate: Hungary: too many female academics, says report

A report on Hungary's higher education system compiled by the State Audit Office complains that female students now outnumber male students. It says that too much "pink education" not only puts men at a disadvantage but also leads to demographic problems: educated women have more difficulties finding a husband and bear fewer children. Hungarian-language media shake their heads in dismay.

Some 70,000 people gathered in Prague's central Wenceslas Square on Saturday to demonstrate against inflation, Covid vaccinations and letting more immigrants into the country, according to police figures. The demonstrators accused the government of being more concerned about Ukraine than its own people and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala's centre-right government.

During a visit to Rome Manfred Weber, President of the conservative European People's Party (EPP), has endorsed Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party in its campaign for the Italian parliamentary elections to be held on 25 September. Forza Italia has joined forces with far-right politicians Giorgia Meloni (Fratelli d'Italia) and Matteo Salvini (Lega) to form an alliance that looks set to win. Europe's press is alarmed.

Debate: Third relief package for Germany

In view of the soaring energy prices, the German government has announced a third relief package to support citizens and the economy in the crisis. The new package which includes electricity price caps, one-off payments, heating cost subsidies and a new citizen's allowance amounts to over 65 billion euros.
