Germany will no longer train the Libyan coast guard over its alleged abuse of migrants,

"The German government cannot currently justify the training of the Libyan coast guard by German soldiers in view of the repeated unacceptable behaviour by individual units of the Libyan coast guard toward refugees and migrants, and also toward non-governmental organisations," German foreign ministry spokeswoman Andrea Sasse said.

Italian prime minister Mario Draghi said Thursday he had received assurances from Russian president Vladimir Putin that Europe would not have to pay for natural gas in roubles — as demanded — and defused fears that Moscow would cut off supplies used for heating and electricity, AP reported. Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg said Russian military forces are not pulling back from Kyiv and other cities, as announced by the Kremlin, Reuters reported. "According to our intelligence, Russian units are not withdrawing but repositioning. Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in the Donbas region," Stoltenberg said on Thursday. Additional offensive actions are expected and Nato members will continue to provide weapons to Ukraine, he added.

Estonia's prime minister Kaja Kallas said on Wednesday Nato should boost its military presence in the Baltic states, Reuters reported. She called for combat-ready divisions, air defence, and more ships patrolling the Baltic Sea during a conference with Denmark's prime minister Mette Frederiksen.
