Fri, 06/05/2020 - 12:42
On 12 June the Committees on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and International Trade (INTA) will hold a remote vote on "Recommendations on the negotiations for a new partnership with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
17 other EP committees have also provided their contributions to this major report, which outlines the Parliament's position for the on-going negotiations and would serve as Parliament's input into the discussion at the European Council in June, where stock will be taken of the progress of negotiations.

In-Depth Analysis - Trade and biodiversity - PE 603.494 - Committee on Foreign Affairs

Fri, 06/05/2020 - 00:00
International trade has a direct impact on EU biodiversity, imported invasive species and pathogens, being an example. Trade also impacts global biodiversity, for instance through the 'virtual' water, land, and deforestation contained in EU imports. Economic theory shows that trade with countries that fail to protect a renewable resource can be detrimental for all. Protecting global biodiversity calls for a variety of instruments, at the EU border as well as in the provisions of preferential agreements. The EU already includes biodiversity-related non-trade provisions in trade agreements, but these provisions are not legally binding and hardly effective. This is partly explained by the complexity of the issues posed by biodiversity: since there is no simple synthetic indicator, policy instruments are difficult to enforce. However, an effort to specify measurable and verifiable commitments is needed; more binding mechanisms, along with transparent and automatic sanctions in case of non-compliance should be considered.

Latest news - Next AFET Committee meetings - 25 May and 4 June - Committee on Foreign Affairs

Tue, 06/02/2020 - 17:26

"In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

On 2 April, the Conference of Presidents updated the EP's calendar of activities to introduce an extraordinary plenary session on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April in Brussels, and additional dates for remote meetings for EP governing bodies, committees and political groups.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next AFET Committee meeting will take place on 4 June and AFET-INTA Joint committee meeting on 12 June. (via videoconference)
