Representatives of the governments of almost 200 countries are convening for two weeks in Sharm-el-Sheikh for the 27th UN Climate Change Conference. A key topic for host Egypt is the demand that industrialised countries, as the main perpetrators of climate change, pay compensation to developing countries, which are those worst affected. Europe's press is not impressed by the declarations of the main polluting nations.

With Hungary in the midst of an economic crisis, the government in Budapest has announced that it will no longer finance Hungarian-language media in Romania. Journalists report that between 2017 and 2019 alone, it paid 10.5 million euros to the Erdélyi Médiatér association which used the funds to buy up relevant outlets in Transylvania. Media in Hungary and Romania discuss what the withdrawal will mean.

The new Italian government is taking a harder line on migration policy and refusing safe port rescue ships carrying refugees. An exception was made for minors and vulnerable people, for example those rescued by the German ship Humanity 1, who were allowed to disembark. But all the other migrants should be taken care of by the states under whose flag the rescue ships sail, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi insists. Can this problem be solved?
