In the Finnish parliamentary elections, the current government has been voted out of office - despite the popularity of its leader. Sanna Marin's Social Democrats came in third, just behind the right-wing populist The Finns. The winner of the election is the National Coalition Party. Its leader Petteri Orpo is now set to become the new prime minister - provided he can find a coalition partner.

Russia took over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council on 1 April. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described this as a "slap in the face to the international community". Europe's press also denounces the fact that Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council with veto power, has such a strong position in the UN. What, if anything, can be done?

The popular Spanish Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz announced her candidacy to become the country's first female head of government in the general election in December on Sunday. Díaz is running for Sumar, a platform she has launched to fill the "space to the left of the Socialists". She has the support of more than ten leftist parties, but not of the ruling coalition party Podemos which proposed her as minister two years ago.
