Debate: Aborted Wagner rebellion: what was that?

Chaos and confusion in Russia: instead of waging war against Ukraine together with the Russian Armed Forces, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary organisation, ordered his fighters to march on Moscow over the weekend. In a televised address Putin said he would punish the mutineers, whom he accused of treason. Hours later, the advance was called off. Prigozhin will reportedly not be punished. Commentators try to make sense of the events.

Debate: Greece: what does Mitsotakis' victory mean?

With almost all votes counted, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' liberal-conservative Nea Dimokratia has secured a clear victory in the second round of Greece's parliamentary elections with 40.5 per cent of the vote. The left-wing Syriza party led by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras came second with 17.8 percent. Greek media voice concern about the strong showing of several small far-right parties, which together won almost 13 percent of the vote.

Debate: Romania: now the judges are on strike

First the teachers and now 3,000 Romanian judges and prosecutors have gone on an unofficial strike. The background is a draft law due to be debated in parliament this week which foresees a gradual increase in the retirement age for magistrates and a reduction in their pensions. Under the current law they have the option to retire after 25 years of service. Is the protest justified?

On 28 June 1969, gays, lesbians, transgender and other queer people rioted for the first time when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club on Christopher Street. The uprising triggered further protests and Pride parades against the criminalisation of LGBTQI+ across the globe. June has now become Pride Month worldwide.
