The Council and the European Parliament yesterday evening reached a provisional agreement on updates to the EU’s financial regulation, which lays down the principles for the management, implementation and control of the EU budget. The main reason for this targeted revision is the need to align the financial regulation with the current multiannual financial framework (MFF) 2021-2027.

The Council today adopted implementing decisions approving the amended recovery and resilience plans of Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Romania. Most of the amended recovery and resilience plans now include a new REPowerEU chapter. This will contribute to accelerating the countries' transition towards clean energy, diversifying their energy supplies and improving their energy efficiency.

The Council imposed restrictive measures on two individuals, as part of EU’s response to the threat posed by Hamas and its brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks in Israel on 7 October 2023.

The Council renewed EU restrictive measures in view of the gravity of the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo until 12 December 2024.

Die EU sollte ihre Regeln für humanitäre Hilfe überarbeiten, so die führende Hilfsorganisation Caritas. Diese würden derzeit die Bereitstellung von Mitteln für Organisationen verhindern, die nicht in der EU ansässig sind.

Die EU-Finanzminister haben am Freitag (8. Dezember) die spanische Vizepremierministerin Nadia Calviño zur nächsten Chefin der Europäischen Investitionsbank (EIB) ernannt. Dies bedeutet eine Stärkung des spanischen Einflusses innerhalb der Europäischen Union.

Während sich die Finanzminister in Brüssel treffen, um eine Einigung über die Haushaltsregeln der EU zu erzielen, kann Europa nur hoffen, dass sie nicht länger auf die Propheten der falschen Sparsamkeit hören und mehr Flexibilität für Investitionen zulassen.
